Carla:

I've responded to your support question here in the "Vendors" section, so that other people looking for vendors for hard cases can find the information more easily.

There are a variety of sources for hard cases suitable for the REX. Are you looking for a case for the REX 6000 or REX 5000? It doesn't make too much difference except that there are a few options which will allow you to access your REX 5000 without pulling it out of the case. I find the REX 6000 only partially useful without access to the touch screen.

Anyways, I would start off by checking the REX Cases section of rex6000.org. There you will find a wide array of links to clear cases, hard shells, hard aluminum cases, cigarette cases, etc. In general, anything that is designed to hold a PCMCIA card will fit a REX just fine and can be used as a REX case. To look for other cases, try a search on google for PCMCIA + cases.

The crystal hard cases you mention are probably the ones being sold under the name "durastor" in many places, so you could also try a search on google for PCMCIA + durastor. The only problem with these is that they won't have the piece cut out where the Tech Center Labs version did, so you will either have to open the case entirely to use it or you will have to try to cut out the appropriate plastic piece yourself.

For ultra-safe protection, you can try the Microtech MediaVault. A relatively inexpensive Canadian vendor for this case is listed a number of posts down further here in the Vendors section of the REX Forum.

Also, I bet that if you contacted Tech Center Labs by email that they would offer to sell you one of their various old cases for the REX. I bought some old REX 5000 supplies there two or three years ago and they still had some stock left even though they were no longer advertising any of it on their site. I doubt that you will find anyone else who has a "durastor"-style of case with the piece of plastic cut out to provide access to the REX buttons. And in fact, Tech Center Labs were the only source I ever found for what I consider to be the best REX 5000 case: a slim piece of leather folded in half with the REX stuck in a plastic sleeve on one half and a titanium plate stuck in another sleeve facing it when closed -- when open you could press the REX 5000 buttons right through the plastic. It was ultra thin and super-sturdy.

There is also a neat case for the REX 6000 which does not appear in the rex6000.org site, which was brought to my attention by a poster on the rex.mamy.to message board. It is a combined money clip and MAPS card carrier and the REX 6000 fits absolutely perfectly in the MAPS card carrier slot. This is the case which I now use most frequently with my REX 6000. This case is called a Smart Money Clip, made by Storus.

I have no financial interest in, nor do I have any personal involvement with any of the companies mentioned in this posting.

Phil.

I am planning eventually on posting some pictures somewhere, but in the meantime here are a couple quick answers.

> does it hold the rex securely?

Yes, and surprisingly it seems to maintain its grip fairly well. There must be a point at which it becomes too loose to keep a hold of the REX, but in general it holds it quite well.

> does it scratch the rex?

Yes, a little bit, along the face just inside the indented grooves -- but it doesn't scratch the screen itself. Initially, you do not notice any scratching, but with extended use, eventually you realize that it has been scratching it a tiny bit each time you pull it out. The friction against the face is primarily how it keeps a hold of the REX. To me, these scratches are not important, but they are definitely fine scratches visible on the aluminum (or whatever) casing.
