Problems with Rex 6k?

I am considering buying a rex but I was just wondering if anyone has noticed anything that would make the rex a bad choice. Two things in particular:
-is it true that you cannot scroll in the calendar's day view?
-is the screen readable or is it too small?
Anything else would be great. Thanks.

Choice of REX as PDA depends on your needs

The choice of using a REX 6000 as your PDA depends on your needs. Obviously, the people in this forum will almost universally recommend the REX 6000 as a good choice because it meets their/our needs. You have to make an assessment based on your specific needs and your specific hardware.

RE: screen readability:
I think most people feel the REX 6000 screen is surprisingly crisp for its size. It is sometimes difficult to read in low light conditions and has no backlight, so some users carry a stylus with a lighted tip they can use in such conditions. This is no more of an issue than it would be for any other non-backlit PDA.

Support and software issues:
The REX 6000 is a discontinued product and therefore there is no support available from Xircom/Intel and there will not likely be any future software updates to the synchronization programs. Some users with Windows XP and/or with Outlook XP have had difficulties setting up a REX on their computer. You should determine whether your hardware and PIM are compatible with the REX before deciding to buy it.

Further info:
The excellent REX 6000 resource www.rex6000.org has a (slightly out of date) page devoted to a list of known issues with the REX 6000. Aside from issues around XP, this page lists all the known issues that I know of. Note that some people have successfully installed a REX 6000 on an XP machine and also made it compatible with Outlook XP.

RE: scrolling in calendar view:
Apparently this is a known issue. I've not run into this problem before since my days are not packed with multiple events, but here is a quote from the known issues page referred to above:
Quote:
The REX 6000 has a new "day view" that displays only the pending calendar events and tasks for the current day. For example, If it is 2:00 PM, only events starting on or after 2:00 PM and pending tasks will display. The day view is accessed from the main menu - clicking on the date in the top-left of the main menu displays the day view screen.
This is a nice feature, but . . . if there are more items (tasks and events) pending on that day than fit on the screen, the extra items fall off, and there is no scroll function to see them. The screen has seven lines, so only up to a total of 7 events and tasks will display.

When I look at my REX, however, I see scroll bars in the Day view, so maybe this problem was fixed?

[New info added during edit: I understand now what this "day view" is. There are two different ways of viewing a single calendar day on your REX. One way is to use the calendar, and in the calendar you can select day, week or month views and they all scroll and display the way you would expect, including the single day view for Today. The other way of viewing this info is to click on the date at the top of the main home page screen of the REX and this provides what I gather is the "day view" referred to above. In this view, you see a list of today's tasks and events together, but as indicated in the "known issue" posting, if there are more than 7 items, then the others will not display. To see these items you would have to use the calendar or the task functions, instead of using this top date link. I just realized today that I almost never use that top date link: the calendar function is always available from every REX menu page through a single tap on the calendar icon in the bottom list of silkscreened tool buttons. That view always dispays a list of today's events first in the default, day view, and this list includes a scroll bar. That is how I view my appointments/events for the day. You will only run into the calendar view problem if you use the link to the date which appears at the top of the home screen.]

Finally:
The REX is really small. It fits in the PCMCIA slot of your notebook. If you want a PDA that is small and that requires no additional hardware to attach to your notebook when travelling, then it will be hard to find somethiing as excellent as the REX 6000, even now that the REX is almost five years old.

Phil.

Ok then! Sounds like the only thing I need to know is, is there anyone that has set the software up on windows XP? I run windows XP MAPS PC edition and since it is a MAPS pc, the rex is pretty much a perfect solution! Thank you for the update and please help solve this final issue if you are able. Thanks,
Flyboy
